On Thursday, July 24, 2025, federal authorities filed a civil complaint in the Northern District of Texas to seize over $2.4 million in cryptocurrency connected to ransomware activity, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy E. Larson.
The complaint states that on April 15, 2025, the FBI in Dallas confiscated 20.2891382 Bitcoin from address bc1q5d8af0crjhlnepjq08muhh55899rf2ktye3sxd, now worth more than $2.4M. Investigators allege the funds were either the proceeds of, or directly involved in, illegal acts like money laundering and extortion linked to ransomware attacks.
The Bitcoin was traced back to an address allegedly controlled by a member of the Chaos ransomware group, who goes by the alias “Hors.” This group is believed to be responsible for cyberattacks targeting victims both in North Texas and beyond.
The civil action was filed under Case No. 3:25-CV-01920-K. The Dallas division of the FBI led the cryptocurrency seizure effort.
