Manassas City Public Schools in Virginia USA shut down Monday after a cyber incident

Manassas City Public Schools will not hold classes on Monday after a cyber attack wiped out parts of the district’s phone and network systems. Families were alerted Sunday night that the disruption was serious enough to make a normal school day unrealistic.

Superintendent Kevin Newman posted a message on Facebook saying the problem has nothing to do with the physical safety of the buildings, but the tech situation is messy enough that the district wants a day to sort things out. With phones cutting in and out and the network acting up, the plan is to give IT room to work without the pressure of a school day unfolding at the same time.

The district’s tech staff has been digging into the issue since the weekend, and outside cybersecurity specialists are now helping them figure out what went wrong. Newman acknowledged that the timing is not ideal for families and promised to share updates as soon as there’s solid information to pass along.

Students already had Tuesday off, so the district is aiming to reopen on Wednesday. That plan might change depending on how quickly systems come back online.
