Dillon County investigating possible cyber incident

Officials in Dillon County, South Carolina, are looking into a cyber incident that appeared early this week and could be the result of a hack. The issue was first noticed on Monday, Nov. 3. Since then, the county has brought in law enforcement and outside cybersecurity experts to help with the review.

County leaders told local station WPDE they found a “network disruption affecting county systems” and began checking for any unauthorized access. They haven’t said which offices or systems were hit. So far, there’s been no sign of public safety problems.

In a post shared by a local newspaper, county staff described the matter as a disruption and said the investigation is ongoing.

Dillon County lies along the North Carolina border and has roughly 28,000 residents. The county seat is the city of Dillon.

The situation comes a few months after Spartanburg County reported a cyberattack that briefly interrupted some online services. Emergency dispatch remained online in that case, but it showed how South Carolina counties continue to face digital threats.

Dillon County officials said their forensic review is continuing and that they’ll follow state notification rules if any personal or sensitive data was exposed.
