In a significant international effort, Thai authorities, in collaboration with Swiss and U.S. agencies, have apprehended four European nationals in Phuket. These individuals are accused of executing ransomware attacks that have impacted over 1,000 victims globally, resulting in approximately $16 million in damages.

The operation, dubbed "PHOBOS AETOR," was spearheaded by the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau under the leadership of Police Lieutenant General Trairong Phiwphan. Raids were conducted across four locations in Phuket, leading to the arrest of two men and two women. Authorities seized more than 40 items, including mobile phones, laptops, and digital wallets. The suspects are facing charges of conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

This crackdown was initiated following urgent requests from Swiss and U.S. authorities, highlighting the suspects' involvement in a transnational criminal organization. Between April 30, 2023, and October 26, 2024, the group allegedly deployed Phobos ransomware against 17 Swiss companies. Their modus operandi involved unauthorized access to company networks, data theft, and file encryption. They demanded cryptocurrency payments for decryption keys and threatened to publish stolen data if ransoms were not paid. To obscure their tracks, they utilized cryptocurrency mixing services.

The suspects are currently in custody, with their identities withheld as investigations continue. This operation underscores the importance of international cooperation in combating cybercrime and holding perpetrators accountable.
